A Year of Stories: “Meeting Kristen Schaal”
Some stories are just cool. They don’t have a point or a message. They’re just unabashedly awesome.
This is one of those stories.
I was a senior in college and preparing to venture out into the real world and try my hand at full time entertainment. I had already turned down a PhD offer, cementing my decision to attempt a career in magic rather than spend another 5-7 years in school.
The Director of Student Activities at my school had given me a lot of stage time over the years, but he was about to offer me an unforgettable opportunity.
“Hey Brian, would you be interested in opening for Kristen Schaal?”
Would I??? This was a world before Bob’s Burgers, and I was a HUGE fan of HBO’s Flight of the Conchords. Kristen Schaal was an alternative comedian who played Brett and Jermaine’s lone fan of their band on the show. She was weird and hilarious.
And I couldn’t wait to meet her.
I was being given a full 30 minutes to perform on stage in front of nearly 600 people for family weekend, as the opening act for a minor celebrity. My friend Scotty came with me and brought his camera. We set up for my portion of the show and then just waited for her to arrive.
When she did, she was everything you would expect from the characters she plays on TV and in the movies: quirky, bubbly, and very nice.
“Are you Brian, the magician?” she asked as she walked toward us.
I couldn’t believe she knew my name already. I stammered through meeting her and we asked if it was okay to take a photo.
“Of course!” she exclaimed. “Why don’t we do a whole shoot?”
I tried to maintain my professional demeanor, but eventually broke down and asked her to sign one of my Flight of the Conchords DVD boxes. She was more than happy to oblige.
My performance went very well. I was on a high from having met Kristen and it definitely shined through. Scotty got some great photos of me on stage, which became part of my promo moving forward.
The school newspaper gave me a fantastic write-up, which also became a feature part of my promotional package in my first year as a full time magician.
As experiences go it is one that I will never forget. Thanks for being such a class act Kristen.
Until next time,
