A Year of Stories: “What do you do?”
One of the most difficult things about being a magician is the social aspect. Unless you manage to avoid all human contact, you will inevitably end up in social situations where you will have to answer the standard social gathering question:
“So, what do you do?”
It seems easy to answer.
“I’m a magician!”
The problem for many magicians is that it’s too vague. People inevitably conjure up (get it?) an image of a clowny character in a cape and top hat, with a wand, and pulling a rabbit out of a hat. Most people immediately assume you work for kids.
Before I get all the hate mail, let me clarify: There’s nothing wrong with being a kids magician. In fact I think kids magic is much more difficult than the average adult audience.
But just like a surgeon doesn’t want people to think she is a pediatrician, and a pediatrician doesn’t want people to think that he is a dermatologist, because each of those are specialties within the medical field, I don’t want people to think that I am a kids magician. It’s simply not what I do.
On top of that, I am not exclusively a magician. I perform comedy, magic, mind reading, and live music all in one show.
One night at a networking event an elegant, well-dressed, properly spoken lady asked me,
“What do you do?”
In an effort to come up with a succinct answer that would convey both that my work was for adults and that I did more than just magic, this is what came out of my mouth:
“I’m an adult entertainer.”
She still hired me.
Lesson: You never know where your next gig is going to come from.
